"Knowing The Bible" continued...

Take note that Paul warned against any gospel that is contrary to the Gospel of Christ. There are unfortunately many churches and off-shoots of Christianity that teach doctrines that are against the Bible and even approve of sin. No matter a preacher’s credentials, he does not have authority to change the Bible, and Paul stated that we aren’t even to believe angels that teach a contrary gospel. Did you know that the founder of the Mormon faith supposedly received his revelations from an angel? They teach that there are many gods, and that an exalted man is the Father of the Holy Trinity and that he has a mother, a father, and a wife. They also teach that Jesus was born from a physical union of the Father and the Virgin Mary. It looks like Paul would call them accursed!

There are many more that have perverted the Truth. Some deception is simply to please men, like allowing sin. Inherited lies can be passed from one to another if a person does not know the Bible for themselves. Others may change what the Bible says for power, money, or even for purposeful destruction. Satan knows the Word, and he will use it against us.

A clear example of this can be found in the temptation of Christ. Matthew 4:4-7 says “5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in [their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”

The devil tried to twist Scripture that was about trusting in God to make Jesus tempt God. We must take note of our Master in this example. How did Jesus answer this assault against the Word? He answered with Scripture! We have to know the Bible to fight against the enemy.

We need to be diligent in our studies, and we can take confidence in knowing that we are not alone in it. The Spirit will enable us to understand the Holy Scripture deeper. 2 Timothy 2:15-17 says “15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane [and] vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus.”

Dividing or “cutting straight” the Word is a comparison to a carpenter. If a carpenter is not careful with his work, he will make a crooked table. If we’re not careful with the Word, we’ll make a crooked life. Just like things will fall off of that table and be ruined, our unlevel lives will bring much ruin. If we don’t know the Bible, false teachings will spread like a canker, gangrene, or cancer! It will bring destruction as it eats away at our life.

As Christians, the Word will bring us comfort and nourish us, but it can also be cutting and convicting. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word as “… quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” The Bible most definitely convicts unbelievers, but it can also cut Christians too. If we feel conviction, we need to deal with that sin right away. We shouldn’t fear what the Holy Bible says, and we should allow it to have its perfect work in our lives.

We must know the Word to uphold Truth, to know God better, to be more Christ-like, and to be in one accord. If we are together with God, we will be together with our brethren. Christians are bound together in Spirit. Let us allow the Bible to bind us together in mind.
